US Senate approval: Protect the public from toxins in cabin air

Senator Dianne FeinsteinThe U.S. Senate has approved an amendment by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) that would require the FAA to conduct a study of air quality in the cabins of U.S. airliners.

The amendment is designed to ensure that the FAA has the information it needs to protect the public from harmful toxins in ventilation systems on commercial aircraft.

It requires that the FAA complete a study of cabin air quality and that airlines allow air quality monitoring on their aircraft for the study. This is exactly the purpose of the Cranfield University study currently underway in the UK, which was due to report its findings in March 2010.

Numerous studies have already shown clear evidence of a health problem. Solutions are available now and what we need is action, and not yet another round of interminable research.

However, we applaud Senator Feinstein for taking on the cabin air quality issue and for getting this amendment approved.
