Complaint to Lufthansa about cabin air quality

Bernadette Baumann was a flight attendant for Lufthansa for 20 years but had to give up flying in 1997 due to illness caused by exposure to toxins in the aircraft. In October 2010 she was exposed again while travelling as a passenger and has suffered further health problems. This is a translation of her letter of complaint to Lufthansa.

CEO Mr W. Mayrhuber Deutsche Lufthansa AG

Dear Mr Mayrhuber

On October 23rd 2010 I flew with LH 4985 from Dublin to Frankfurt. Due to fog in Frankfurt there was a 1hour delay in Dublin which we spent waiting on the apron. After flying a holding pattern, we landed but had to wait again for the parking position to be freed - during this time a horrible smell of vapors entered the cabin, the smell comparable to old, wet socks and toxic co2 and other fumes. I immediately felt nauseous , dizzy and my heart started racing with a pulse around 140, eyes burning. There was no possibility to avoid the fumes, not even covering up my face helped.

After disembarkation and since I have following symptoms: sinusitis, sore throat, coughing, burning eyes, palpitations, extreme fatigue, insomnia, muscle weakness, lymph swelling.

I know from previous experiences that chemicals and toxins are common in aircraft and are very health hazardous. This incident was extremely bad and needs the attention and report to relevant competent bureaus.

It is unacceptable that passengers are exposed to such health hazardous dangers.

Kindly follow this up. I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely

Bernadette Baumann
