Organophosphates
Government advisers on the Committee on Toxicity have been sent a new review on organophosphates which suggests that low level exposure causes damage to the brain and nervous system. Dr Sarah Mackenzie Ross, a neuropsychologist from University College London is one of the authors of the meta-analysis - a systematic review of the best available evidence - and she tells Claudia Hammond that the evidence suggests that people who have been exposed to low levels of organophosphates have impaired cognitive function.
Organophospate pesticides are the most widely used insecticides in the world in agriculture and horticulture. They're also used in industry as lubricants, plasticizers and flame-retardants and pest-control teams use them too. But it's been known for some time, despite their importance in food production and disease prevention, that in high doses, they damage the brain and the nervous system. What's more controversial is whether there is a risk from low-level exposure to organophosphates, so this latest publication will be of interest to the Committee on Toxicity which is currently reviewing this subject.

Flyer's Friend™ Face Mask Testimonial
Tuesday, 02 November 2010 17:27
| For twenty five years I have flown with oxygen on any flights longer than an hour as a result of having been very chemically sensitive years ago. When I heard of the masks that Aerotoxic offers, I decided to purchase them for 'back-up' protection and for short flights. Little did I know that I would put them to the test right after I purchased them. In June of 2010, I flew from Sydney to Los Angeles but missed my flight in Los Angeles to New York. As a result, I had no choice but to wait until the next day and travel with oxygen or go on the next flight without. Intuitively, I sensed that it would be OK to go on that day but use the Aerotoxic mask. I flew the five hour flight with the mask on most of the time. During that time, I could not tell any obvious difference between the mask and the oxygen. I had no symptoms at all that I would typically associate with 'plane air'. I expected the mask to be helpful, but not to virtually duplicate the effects of flying with oxygen ... yet it did! So, to anyone who has a history of chemical sensitivity or who for ANY reason wants to avoid the petrochemicals, the viruses, etc. in a plane, don't hesitate to purchase these masks. They DO work!

| BALPA LOG Magazine on Cabin Air Quality June/July 2011 – 8th June 2011
Magazine article text:
CABIN AIR QUALITY The results of the Cranfield study are still delayed, due to the peer review process. We are informed that they will be presented in May 2011 to the Seattle Aerospace Medical Association.
Aerotoxic Association comment 9th June 2011:
The Cranfield University Study was published on 10th May 2011 and has already drawn strong criticism from many experts of its peer review process with its inability and unwillingness to identify and publicise the identity of the substances in a fume event, which the UK House of Lords Science and Technology Committee specifically recommended should be done urgently in 2007.

Cranfield report finally published
Tuesday, 10 May 2011 22:08
| The Cranfield University report “Aircraft Cabin Air Sampling” has finally been released. It comes as no surprise to us that they have concluded that cabin air contaminated with oil doesn’t pose any health problems. Or rather, that there is no evidence that it does.

BALPA: Health effects of contaminants in cabin air
Friday, 08 April 2011 08:30
| This is the document on cabin air quality that is available to BALPA members, written by Dr Sandy Mitchell. We believe it contains a lot of factually-incorrect information and gives the impression that the problem is negligible. Suggesting that affected crews are suffering from hyperventilation and that people who remove themselves from exposure always recover their health is misleading.

AHWG being wound up
Wednesday, 16 March 2011 12:39
| In the UK, the Department for Transport has announced that it is closing down the Aviation Health Working Group. After ten years, the department seems happy that the group has run its course and is no longer needed. In those ten years, £400,000 of taxpayers' money has been spent, no meaningful research had been completed and Cranfield University have not published their Cabin Air Quality study. It has hardly been a glowing success and has in no way fulfilled its intended role. |

From Dr Sarah Myhill's press release:
In a dramatic turnabout yesterday the GMC lifted Dr Myhill’s suspension and restored her license to practise medicine. Dr Myhill was jubilant.
Her first reaction was to thank her many friends who had stood by her. She said “I am so grateful to those thousands of patients and medical colleagues who knew that I was a good doctor who had done nothing wrong and kept their faith in me. Without their help and support I would have struggled to find the strength to fight.”

Mandatory Occurrence Reports
Written by Aerotoxic Association
Monday, 18 October 2010 15:04
| Every month the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) collates all the Mandatory Occurrence Reports (MORs) that they have received. These are reports on matters that affect flight safety and are submitted by aircrew of UK-registered airlines to their respective employers, who then forward them to the CAA.
At our request the CAA have been sending us the reports and we now look at a typical month, June 2010. We continue to be very concerned by the number of incidents concerning oil fumes. |

Organophosphates and suicidal tendencies
Tuesday, 24 August 2010 00:00
| The following letter was published in the ‘Farmers Guardian’ on 20th August 2010. The author highlights a document produced in the UK by the Health & Safety Executive which lists “suicidal intent” as one of the chronic symptoms of organophosphate (OP) poisoning. As it has been shown thay OPs in the form of tricresyl phosphate regularly get into airliner cabins, it is no coincidence that some of our members have felt so ill that thoughts of suicide have also entered their minds. |

Confidential paper on contaminated cabin air leaked to the German press
Saturday, 14 August 2010 17:09
| Last Thursday German TV and radio were hot with the revelation of an internal paper leaked to the German media. The document is from the Bundesverband der Deutschen Fluggesellschaften, BDF (Association of German airlines) and reveals their concerns of further media attention on the subject of contaminated cabin air. It urges its members to do their best to keep attention away from passengers who have been affected by contaminated cabin air, to keep quiet about the issue, and if they do have to speak, to make sure they all have their stories straight. |

Wednesday, 13 January 2010 17:09
| DHL Air Ltd, who operate freight-carrying Boeing 757s issued this notice to their crews on the subject of cockpit fumes. What seems alarming is that this instruction on fault-finding gives the pilots no advice about the neurotoxic health effects of the fumes, and in fact describes their regular occurrence as normal, contrary to Boeing who describe these events as “rare”.
