Aerotoxic Syndrome Tenth Anniversary
- The 20th October 2009 is the tenth Anniversary of the introduction of the term "Aerotoxic Syndrome". Let's hope we don't have a 20th anniversary!
- The Aerotoxic Association has sent out 161 letters to Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) in the UK with a recently published guide for health care providers on the subject of contaminated air. This is something the CAA and the National Health Service should have been doing long ago, as many AMEs are still unaware of the devastating health effects.
- We are getting over 500 visits to www.aerotoxic.org every day, four times as much as three months ago. The word "Aerotoxic" is getting out.
| BBC "Today" Programme On 24th the BBC "Today" programme ran an item about Aerotoxic Syndrome. It featured Dr Peter Julu talking about his research. He was quite clear that the pilots with neurological damage that he has tested have developed their condition as a direct result of exposure to organophosphates on aircraft. John Hoyte also talked about the work of the Aerotoxic Association and the hundreds of victims he has helped in the two years since the Association was founded. The AA is also mentioned in this accompanying BBC article which includes a video of a pilot who has lost his licence due to illness caused by cabin air toxins.

BAE New Air Purification System On 15th September BAE Systems proudly announced the new "AirManager" air cleaning system that it has developed with Quest International. It has been touted as a response to fears about SARS, Avian Flu and Swine Flu and "market perception" of cabin air quality. While it should be commended that a solution to the contaminated cabin air problem is being offered, a little honesty into the real reason for its introduction would be appreciated. Why else are the first two aircraft types to benefit from this system the BAe146 and the Boeing 757 - the two are top of the fume event offenders list? But then again, BAE Systems are not renowned for their good ethical practices.
| Parliamentary Debate We didn't get the opportunity to feature it in our last newsletter, but there was a very informative 90-minute debate in the UK House of Commons about cabin air quality. Shadow Minister and pilot Tobias Ellwood called for the debate and he and others did a good job of showing up the government's denial and lack of ability to address this issue. Watch the debate on video.

Conflict of interest? The UK government-funded cabin air quality study at Cranfield University promise results by 15th March 2010. After previous doubts as to the validity of their methods, we ask whether external interests will influence their results. Read more.
